5/30/2023 0 Comments Lydia silk project canvas![]() ![]() The problem for me with both of those options was Switzerland's super high import tax: so even renting or trying on a dress (or two, or three) could cost me over a thousand Swiss Francs just in VAT since the tax is based on the dresses’ actual value, not the rental or try-on fee. I researched businesses that let you rent dresses and others that let you pick several to be shipped to you so you can “shop” from your home. At the time, I didn’t feel comfortable or even excited about traveling home to New York to shop there. My other options at the time felt slim: I knew I couldn’t go wedding dress shopping locally since shops in Basel/Zurich would have been closed due to the lockdown. I don’t know if this was a symptom of my aforementioned newfound fashion passion (again, this was winter of 2020, only a few months after finishing my first handmade dress ever–Birgitta Helmersson’s #zwgatherdress) or if it was a logistical choice probably both. I was however, strangely convinced that I wanted to make whatever I wore to my wedding. I didn’t even know I wanted to wear one, and if I did, I certainly didn’t know what style. My sewing room had no men’s or women’s sections, no size restrictions or associations, and no style, price tag or sustainability goal that seemed too out of reach.Īnyways, all this is to say that prior to getting engaged, I never thought much, if at all, about wedding dresses. It felt like the first time EVER that I could ask myself “what do I want to wear?” because suddenly there were no constraints. When I started sewing my own bags (in 2019) and then clothes (2020) I began to see fashion and certain designers in a new light, and my free time became suddenly consumed with learning about the construction of clothes and re-discovering my own aesthetic. I found fashion intimidating, shopping exhausting, and online shopping impossible. While living in New York (which is synonymous to my pre-sewing years) I wore oversized, all-black clothing predominantly from the men’s section of COS and random sample sales. So, here we were in December 2020, with our wedding date and venue confirmed (it would be outdoors) when Switzerland went into its second major lockdown, one that would force all non-essential business to close their doors and their employees, including us, to work from home until May.īefore re-discovering sewing as an adult, I wasn’t nearly as interested in fashion. Richard proposed in July 2020 and in November, we scheduled our wedding for early July 2021 with equal parts optimism and anxiety about what would unfold during the next seven months. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Primordia sad robot![]() Humans who are laughing at dumb machines may not think clearly or prepare actively for a future in which even limited robots and AI are key players.Īmazon’s Super Bowl ad featuring Alexa fails initially seemed like a collection of “stupid robot” highlights. Even so, portraying robots as a collection of laughable, malfunctioning parts undermines the seriousness of their implications. These ads are at least somewhat realistic, as robots and AI have fundamental limitations – even the system that can beat an international Go champion isn’t much good at anything else. In “stupid robot” ads, robots have cognitive constraints, sometimes in addition to physical ones. The employee robot is a mess, spurting both hydraulic fluid and gibberish. A 2018 State Farm ad, for instance, pokes fun at a rival agency that has begun using cheap robot agents instead of human ones. The third category of advertising robots doesn’t evoke fear or sympathy, but rather ridicule. Robots may not make great insurance agents. Fear can also distract people from properly understanding and planning for ways in which humans can continue to offer meaningful skills and insights beyond the abilities of any machine. No one knows if robot emotion or sentience are even possible.Īds that instill fear of technology in humans can present an unrealistic and unhelpful mindset for adapting to the increasing presence of this technology in our lives – whether in criminal justice, health care or other areas. They can act as though they have feelings, but experience no actual emotion. Robots have no intentions – only instructions. The threat revolves around who will and who won’t be able to adjust or receive training to get the new jobs.īut the world is a long way off from robots that portray a version of the “ Frankenstein Complex,” Isaac Asimov’s phrase for the human fear that poorly designed mechanical creations might turn against humanity. Most likely, both will happen, as has happened throughout history: Elevator operators disappeared and social-media manager positions were created. Automation may eliminate millions of jobs – and it might create many others that don’t yet exist. There are real threats to humans from robots and AI. A 2017 Halo Top ice cream ad, for example, functions as a 90-second horror movie, in which a robot force-feeds a woman ice cream, and then casually mentions that everyone she knows is dead. Then, of course, there’s the third trope, of the evil robot intent on harming people. Halo Top suggests humans’ only need is ice cream. ![]() A woman in an electronics store asks her friend if he’s listening, and a creepy computer voice issues forth from a speaker: “Always, Denise.” ![]() Rather than reminding viewers of their concerns about burglars or basement flooding, the ad highlights robots and AI as the omnipresent danger. “ Fear is Everywhere,” a paranoia-inducing 2019 commercial, advertises SimpliSafe home security systems, which use some of the same monitoring technology the ad demonizes. Advertisers, like Hollywood, embrace scary robot narratives because they’re more dramatic than ones in which robots and humans get along. “Scary robot” ads are inevitable, given the popularity of the sinister robot trope. All three perpetuate common misconceptions about technologies that are already beginning to play a pivotal role in people’s lives. Since I began studying human-robot interactions almost a decade ago, I’ve observed that in most ads, robots typically fall into one of three general categories: scary, sad or stupid. They’re increasingly common in ads, too: During the 2019 Super Bowl alone, seven ads aired featuring either robots or AI. ![]() From smart devices to self-checkout lanes to Netflix recommendations, robots (the hardware) and AI (the software) are everywhere inside the technology of modern society. Nowhere is the advance of technology more evident than in the rise of robots and artificial intelligence. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Doodlecad tutails![]() ![]() If you have further questions, you may find the answers you are looking for in our help portal. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Sleepless town full movie![]() ![]() Director Lee Chi-Ngai is amazing here, as are stars Takeshi Kaneshiro (“Chungking Express”) and Mirai Yamamoto. This meandering, slick and very Wong Kar Wai-like film is so confusing, you’ll instantly ignore the deluge of plot twists amidst a huge cast of characters and instead focus on the beautiful cinematography and adept direction. “Now it all makes sense,” says Kenichi, Takeshi Kaneshiro’s character near the end of the noir-ish thriller “Sleepless Town”. A lengthy running time and derivative nature of the plot also work against this film, meaning that I didn't think much of it at all.Cast: Kaneshiro Takeshi, Mirai Yamamoto, Lung Sihung, Eric Tsang, Kathy Chow, Seijun Suzuki Yamamoto fails to make her repulsive lead in the least bit likable and suffers because of that, while the excellent Eric Tsang is underused as the mob boss, appearing in all of three short scenes. Kaneshiro is a good actor, but his character isn't given a great deal to do here and comes across as a little staid. I found the last scene to be overlong and devoid of the badly needed emotion it sought to generate, but at least something's going on, unlike in the middle section. Then things pick up in the last half hour, with lots of action and shoot-outs and more twists and turns than in five regular Hollywood movies. The pacing slows down to a snail's crawl while this romance is explored, and the filmmakers do attempt to generate some suspense by keeping their character motivations murky, but it doesn't work very well. For the next hour we're treated to a lifeless romance with one of the most worthless female characters I've seen in a film. Unfortunately, Kaneshiro's character then meets a girl, and the whole film falls flat. The first half hour follows this type of plot with some stylish direction and another solid performance from Takeshi Kaneshiro, who once again delivers a 'quiet but cool' type character with emotions bubbling just under the surface. This Hong Kong/Japan co-production starts out as a traditional gangster thriller, as we meet our youthful hero and find himself caught between opposing sides: a violent criminal gang from Shanghai, who frequently employ torture and murder as their methods, and a lone gunman with psychotic tendencies. Other than that, however, and a plot that could have benefited from a tad more exposition, a good film - stunning to look at (snaps to the cinematographer) and engaging to watch. kind of stretches the whole verisimilitude thing a bit too far. I did feel, however, that she committed what seems to be a common on-screen faux-pas in Japanese and Taiwanese films particularly, of allowing her character to segue from the believable into the I'm-a-raving-hysterical-banshee-of-a-woman who will (case in point) throw myself out of a moving car if the man I *love* tells me I'm not to be trusted. TK gives a solid performance, as usual, while Yamamoto is more-or-less convincing as the morally suspect Natsumi. The opening scene, especially, where the camera follows Kaneshiro's character Kenichi through the back-alleys of Kubuchiko, while the soundtrack wails ethereally is quite something. Seamy, seedy, with some of the most evocative steady-cam work I have seen in a while. Overall, it is a very good movie, and is well worth a watch. And Eric Tsang demonstrates why he is everyone's favourite gangland boss (epitomised in the Infernal Affairs trilogy) This is a fine movie, and whilst the multitude of unpredictable twists really do push the limits of the story. Meanwhile, Mirai Yamamoto, is simply brilliant in her role, keeping everyone guessing as to the motives of her character. Takeshi Kaneshiro, heartthrob to millions of teenage girls in Asia, is perfect in his role with his trademark stone cold yet innocent manner. Plot twists are everywhere in this film, and it's been designed to keep you guessing. ![]() It's a complicated plot (not least to describe) and it is even more than I've said already. Meanwhile, Fu-chun's girlfriend, Natsumi Sato (Yamamoto) turns up to sell something to Kenichi. Yuan wants to get even and attempts to do so by using Kenichi. ![]() Things are calm, however, his former partner-in-crime, Fu-Chun, is rumoured to have returned to Kabukicho, having fled years earlier after killing the number two to gangland boss, Yuan (Tsang). His domain is in Kabukicho, a gangland controlled by various Shanghainese gangs intent on taking overall control. You can sell him anything except children's organs. Kenichi (Kaneshiro) is a half-Japanese, half-Chinese man of the underworld. Sleepless Town was a pleasant surprise for me, a well-written and well-executed film, with a gangster storyline containing enough twists to win a dance contest. ![]() ![]() ![]() Start of a counting-out rhyme Messy place Like hard-liners "Good" times?
